About the Programme The 3-day First Aid at Work course is aimed at personnel who work within an environment that is deemed as posing sufficient risk of injury or encountering ill health. It will provide the skills and confidence to provide first aid treatment as well as how to manage a casualty situation.

The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire the knowledge and understanding required fulfil the requirements of the HSE as a competent First Aider. Also to demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge needed to deal with life threatening emergencies in the workplace.

Pre-RequisiteEnglish IELTS score of 6 or equivalent is highly recommended for those English is not the first language

Course Content

Interpret the HSE definition of First Aid and responsibilities of the First Aider.
React in an emergency situation and manage the incident with confidence
Understand the principles of Respiration and Resuscitation.
Conduct Primary and Secondary Assessment.
Recognise and treat wounds and bleeding disorders.
Treat burns and scalds
Carry out the necessary action for muscle and bone injuries, poisoning, cold and heat injuries.

At the end of the course participants will be personally equipped with the knowledge and skills to deal with casualty management, resuscitation procedures and incident management.

Assessment will take place on the third day of the course. It will consist of a written exam prior to lunch, then three practical assessments in the afternoon. The practical assessments will include CPR, an unconscious casualty and incident management.

Successful completion of the course will result in the award of the HSE registered First Aid at Work certificate. This award is valid for a three-year period, and then a 2-day refresher must be successfully completed.
